St. Johns Cathedral
Hunter Street, Parramatta
disabled access St Johns Parramatta was established as a parish in 1802. While the present building is not the first on the site, the towers were built during the time of Governor Macquarie. They were supposedly modelled on the twin towers of the church at Reculver, the last building Mrs Macquarie saw as she sailed to Australia. The Church has many links with early families in the district such as the Macarthurs, Blaxlands and Houisons to mention just a few. These and other families are remembered by plaques inside the Cathedral. Points of interest include the Maori font given as a gift to St Johns from the people of New Zealand in appreciation of the missionary work of Samuel Marsden the first rector. The bells are a memorial to WW1 (World War One) veterans and are rung by pulling a series of ropes. There is also a Breeches Bible, one of only a few in Australia.
30 minutes plus The site is managed by the Rector and Churchwardens of St Johns Cathedral.
