City Centre - What is Council doing for its future ?

CBD Infrastructure Enhancement Programme

The CBD Infrastructure Enhancement Programme is funded through a levy raised on businesses in the City Centre for ten years, with the first year of the programme starting in 2000/01. The programme aims to significantly improve the standard and general appearance of the city through infrastructure improvements that will attract additional businesses to invest in Parramatta.

The past 12 months have been devoted to planning the roll out of these works. Many of the projects will begin over the next few months. The total amount allocated to the CBD Infrastructure Enhancement Programme in 2000/01 was $1,148,000 with a further $1,242,000 for the 2001/2002 financial year.

Proposed projects include:

  • The purchase of a new footbridge for Elizabeth Street
  • New paving in Smith, George and Macquarie Streets
  • An extension of the City of Trees project and new paving for Wilde Avenue
  • Paving and streetscape works for Church Street
  • The development of new Public Art throughout the city
  • River foreshore enhancements, including new treatments on the Southern side of Lennox Bridge and environmental works to improve the appearance and quality of the river and its foreshore areas

A CBD Reference Group has been formed to help Council set funding priorities for the CBD Infrastructure Enhancement Programme. Participants in this reference group include the Parramatta City Chamber of Commerce, property owners and operators, the NSW Police Parramatta Local Area Command and the NSW Government.

The first five years of the programme will see a third of the budget spent on enhancements to the river and foreshore within the City Centre, to add to improvements already made on some parts of the River.
