Applications for tree removal/loppingPrivate PropertyThe Tree Preservation Order (TPO) protects all trees on public and private property that are 5 metres or more in height.' How does the TPO affect me?If you want to remove or lop a tree that is protected by the TPO you must submit an application to Council with the appropriate fee. I'd like to remove a tree(s)?If you wish to remove a tree(s) you must submit a development application with the appropriate fee. I'm only pruning a tree?A tree pruning application must be submitted and approved prior to carrying out the work. Are there any exemptions to the TPO? Can I remove a dead tree without Council permission?YES. But you must be sure that the tree is completely dead (the TPO defines a dead tree). Can I apply to prune a tree located on a neighbouring property?YES, for the part of the tree overhanging your property, or the portion of roots invading your property ie in the sewer. If the tree is growing on a common boundary consent of both property owners may be required. Public LandCouncil's Parks and Gardens section is responsible for the maintenance of trees located on Council land ie parks. Similarly, other statutory authorities are responsible for their properties, including the Department of Housing. These authorities are not exempt from the requirements of the TPO and require approval from Council prior to removing or lopping a tree. Trees on private property are subject to Council's Tree Preservation Order and the appropriate application is required. In an emergencyIf tree roots have caused a sewer choke- have this confirmed by a plumber and apply for an emergency consent to remove the roots or if deemed necessary the tree. Choosing a contractorAn Arborist is a specialist in the care of trees. Arborists are knowledgeable about the needs of trees, and are trained and equipped to provide proper care. Council recommends that you contact the National Arborists Association of Australia or your local, insured arborist.Does Council supply trees to residents?YES. Open days are held at Council's Nursery in Cowells Lane, Ermington where residents can select two FREE trees/shrubs. Dates are advertised in the Council page of the local newspapers. FREE trees are also given to residents, visitors and local employees on 'green' days such as World Environment Day, Wattle Day and National Tree Day.
