Harris Park Heritage Walk

The Harris Park Heritage Walk celebrates Harris Park as a place of 'firsts' in the colonial history of Australia. Harris Park had the first farm granted to a former convict, the first olive tree to be planted, and some of the first sheep to form the basis of Australia's Merino wool industry, and its river wharf was the first gateway between Sydney and Parramatta.

Harris Park is an area of national heritage significance. It is rich in early European history, and it also contains evidence of first contact between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians. The Heritage Walk connects historic sites and buildings in Harris Park with the Parramatta River and the CBD.

A new pathway will connect the ferry wharf at Charles Street to the historic Queens Wharf where flour and woollen mills, gasworks, boatsheds and inns once thrived. The walk continues on to Hambledon Cottage, Experiment Farm Cottage and Elizabeth Farm, three of the oldest buildings in the country. Interpretive signage along the walking route tells the story of the area through early paintings, prints and photographs, as well as describing some of the important events and people who lived there.

This Walk was made possible with the help of Federation funding from the NSW Heritage Office.
