Restoration of the Charles Byrnes room (in the Parramatta Town Hall) now reveals the true elegance and decorative work contained in this room. |
The room is named after Charles Joseph Byrnes (1835-1917), a local boy who lived in George Street all his life. He was educated at Danield Thurston's Parramatta Commercial Academy, trained as a solicitor, ran the family woollen mill & played a significant role in local politics. He was member for Parramatta 1874-1877 & 1880-1882. Charles Byrnes was elected Mayor in 1875-1882, and laid the foundation stone for the Town Hall in November 1879.
